Oman’s Ministry of Health advises on emergency procedures for ‘Black Widow’ incidents.

Muscat – Do you know that one of the most venomous arachnids – known as ‘Black Widow Spider’ – exits in Oman? What sets it apart from all other spiders is the distinct black globular abdomen with red, orange or brownish stripes. Several specimens have recently been collected in different areas across the sultanate, raising concerns about public safety.

The Ministry of Health shared an advisory confirming the sightings of the spider. Houses, gardens, sheds and barns, are places where they are commonly spotted. The ministry also confirmed that these spiders are known to be venomous. Their bite causes common symptoms like swelling with pain, muscular weakness amongst others. Additionally, a person may experience nausea, vomiting and painful abdominal cramps if bitten.

The ministry cautioned all of emergency procedures in case of the spider bite. Victims are advised not to panic and apply ice packs to help control the symptoms while visiting the nearest healthcare.

Citizens are also requested to report spider sightings to the Muscat Municipality at 1111.
