Muscat- The Omani Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has announced a nationwide ban on the catching, trading, and possession of kingfish. The restriction will be in effect from August 15 to October 15, 2026.
This measure is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the sustainability of kingfish stocks in the Sultanate. By protecting the fish during critical breeding periods, the Ministry aims to support the natural replenishment of the species and secure the future of this vital economic resource.
Key details of the ban include:
-
Scope of Regulations: The ban applies to all coastal regions of Oman and prohibits catching, transporting, purchasing, selling, storing, freezing, or exporting kingfish during the two-month period.
-
Compliance: Fishermen, transport companies, and commercial establishments must comply with these regulations. Those already in possession of kingfish are required to register their stocks with the relevant authorities according to established guidelines.
-
Economic Significance: Kingfish is a cornerstone of the Omani fishing industry. In 2025, the total production reached approximately 19,743 tonnes, valued at over OMR 44 million. The majority of this production—about 83.5%—originates from the Al Wusta and South A’Sharqiyah governorates.
-
Legal Warning: The Ministry has urged all parties to cooperate fully to protect the fish stocks and avoid legal penalties for non-compliance.
This seasonal regulation is a key part of the government’s broader strategy to balance the economic demands of the fisheries sector with long-term environmental sustainability.
