MUSCAT: The Directorate General of Meteorology in Oman has issued a weather alert, warning residents and motorists of strong surface winds expected to sweep across several governorates, triggering dust storms and significantly reducing horizontal visibility.
According to the latest meteorological bulletin, active wind conditions will primarily impact desert and open areas. The governorates expected to face the brunt of these conditions include Al Wusta and Dhofar, along with parts of Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah.
The strong gusts are anticipated to stir up loose dirt and sand, creating localized dust storms that could pose hazards to daily commuters. Authorities have specifically cautioned motorists traveling on exposed routes, such as the Adam-Thumrait highway, where horizontal visibility is expected to drop drastically. Drivers are strongly urged to exercise extra caution, reduce their driving speeds, maintain a safe following distance, and keep their headlights on when navigating through these low-visibility zones.
In addition to the terrestrial impact, the weather system is also expected to agitate coastal waters. Oman Meteorology warned that the Arabian Sea coast will experience rough conditions, with wave heights projected to rise significantly over the coming days. Fishermen, seafarers, and beachgoers have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea and to closely monitor subsequent weather updates before planning any marine activities.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) continues to urge all residents, citizens, and travelers to stay informed by following official weather bulletins and to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of turbulent weather.
