MUSCAT – The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has issued a formal advisory urging the public to exercise extreme caution when using Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications.

The authority highlighted that many VPN services pose significant security threats, potentially compromising the personal data of users. According to the TRA, unsafe VPN applications may engage in several malicious activities, including:

  • Data Exploitation: Tracking or sharing sensitive personal information without consent.

  • Intrusive Permissions: Requesting access to data and system functions that are unnecessary for the app’s operation.

  • Activity Logging: Monitoring and recording users’ private online browsing habits.

  • Malware Risks: Serving as a gateway for malicious software.

  • Phishing and Redirection: Leading users to suspicious websites or harmful links.

The TRA is advising residents to be vigilant regarding the apps they install and to prioritize their digital privacy by avoiding VPN services that lack reputable security standards.
