Oman implements a 6-month ban on expat workers in certain professions.

MUSCAT : The decision, effective from September 1, 2024, aims to prioritize Omani nationals for employment in roles such as construction workers, cleaners, loaders, bricklayers, steel fixers, tailors, electricians, waiters, painters, chefs, and barbers.

The resolution, based on the Labour Law issued by Royal Decree No. 53/2023, and to the service guidelines provided by the Ministry of Labour for trading permits issued under Ministerial Decision No. (180/2022), and in pursuance of work interest, states the following:

Article 1: The issuance of trading permits for the temporary employment of non-Omani workers in private sector establishments for the professions listed in the attached annex is suspended for a period of six (6) months.

Article 2: Notwithstanding the provisions of Article 1, permits may be issued for the employment of non-Omani workers in the professions listed in the annex, provided that the request for renewal or transfer of services is submitted from within the Sultanate of Oman.

Article 3: This decision shall come into effect on 1st September 2024, and the concerned authorities are responsible for implementing its provisions.

Suspension of the issuance of permits for the temporary employment of non-Omani workers will be applied to the following professions:

1- Construction Worker / General
2- Cleaning Worker / General Buildings
3- Loading and Unloading Worker
4- Bricklayer
5- Steel Fixer
6- Tailor / Women’s Clothing / General
7- Tailor / Men’s Clothing / General
8- Electrician / General Electrical Installations
9- Waiter
10- Painter
11- Chef/General
12- Electrician / Home Installations
13- Barber
